The shadowy MNR/Renamo leader Orlando Cristina was shot dead as he lay in bed on a farm outside Pretoria. Cristina had been a big/game hunter, and in colonial times was supposedly a PIDE agent who had infiltrated FRELIMO and even been sent to Algeria for military training. His death appeared to have been the result of internal power struggles within the South African-backed rebel movement.
Public executions continued, this time in Hulene, a Maputo suburb, when six captured MNR were shot by firing squad at a public rally after having been sentenced to death by the Tribunal Militar Revolucionário or TMR.
