Two British men, resident in South Africa, were killed in an ambush inside Mozambique and close to the frontier – Renamo had stated that it regarded foreigners as military targets. In December 1984 a total of ten foreign aid workers were murdered. President Machel announced that the government would take steps to guarantee the safety of foreign workers and technicians. Assumane N'Taula, a member of the Central Committee of the Frelimo Party, was assassinated in Mavago, Niassa: he was the second CC member to die in the conflict in recent months, after Zacarias Tomás was killed in action in September.

With the newspapers publishing regular reports of small-scale engagements with the MNR, yet another Portuguese citizen, the pilot João Lívio Martins de Quental, was detained by the Mozambican authorities on suspicion of being involved in air drops of supplies to the rebels in Gorongosa, using light aircraft. The four Portuguese arrested earlier in Tanzania remained in custody.

The weekly news-magazine Tempo carried reports, with photographs, of FPLM actions in Manhiça district.
