Eduardo Mondlane was born in 1920 in Manjacaze district in what is now Gaza province, the child of a Shangaan-speaking polygamous local leader. He began his schooling after the age of 12, and eventually entered the school run by the Swiss (Presbyterian) Mission, completing his secondary education in South Africa. He began to study at the University of the Witwatersrand ("Wits") but was kicked out on racial grounds after the electoral victory of the National Party in 1948. He pursued his studies in Lisbon, and then in the United States, where he obtained an undergraduate degree, and an MA and a PhD (from Northwestern outside Chicago) as well as getting married to Janet Rae Mondlane.
He then worked first at the United Nations, and then at Syracuse University as an anthropology professor, before resigning in 1963 and moving to Tanganyika to become a political activist in the struggle for Mozambican independence. He had been elected president of the newly-formed Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (FRELIMO) at its founding meeting in Dar es Salaam in 1962, successful partly because of the backing of Julius Nyerere and partly because he was not associated with any of the factions that then existed. He led FRELIMO into the armed struggle against the Portuguese colonial regime, launched on 25 September 1964, but was unable to resolve the split between those who saw a social revolution as an essential component of the struggle, and those who aimed for the more modest goal of just winning independence of some sort. Mondlane was re-elected to the presidency at FRELIMO's second congress, held inside the country in difficult and dangerous conditions, in July 1968.
Early in 1969, Mondlane opened a parcel-bomb while in Dar es Salaam and was killed outright. Those responsible for his death have never been identified, although various theories have been advanced, accusing the Portuguese security policy (PIDE/DGS), rivals within FRELIMO, and even Tanzanian political figures.
