50. Was the MNR Really the Fly in the Ointment
of the Nkomati Accord?

In the context of the Nkomati Accord, an agreement between Mozambique and South Africa signed on 16 March, the MNR was represented in reports as being a "fly in the ointment", implicitly attributing good faith to the apartheid regime: continuous evidence over the following years and months demonstrated clearly that Pretoria had no intention of adhering to principles of good-neighbourliness as long as it was possible to get away with ongoing clandestine support for the rebels.
Nevertheless, the MNR continued with a warlike posture, claiming to have killed or captured 600 government soldiers in March alone, as well as having destroyed 257 lorries and 17 Soviet-made tanks. It announced the intention of "intensifying the struggle" by cutting off road and rail traffic to Maputo.
