Below: Cartoons from the press at the time of the negotiation and subsequent signing of the Nkomati accord. The theme of the marginalisation of the ANC and RENAMO by the agreement appears more than once, and the idea that the signing of the agreement was as unlikely as pigs flying appears in another. Two of the cartoons are slightly later: one, playing on the much-publicised donation of apples for Mozambican children, draws on the metaphor of the rotten or poisoned apple (the accord itself), while the other shows Samora Machel happily singing while P. W. Botha quietly pushed him into the sea.
